I've done some clicker training with my dog, so the ideas in this book jive with what we're already doing, but take the potential to the next level. My dog is a great little guy, but he has some focus issues and he can't be allowed off leash - he takes off after every thing that moves!
We live in the country and our yard isn't fenced. I dream of the day when I can let him off-leash on our walks. I've downloadd any number of training books and they all have something that's been helpful, but when I heard about this book and the "Control Unleashed" concept, I knew I had to download the book.
This book is geared toward agility and similar dog sport competitors, but there's plenty in here that will help even the average owner. I would like to get my dog into agility and if I can get a good foundation on him from the concepts in this book, I think he'll excel. I appreciate the case studies in the book also, My one complaint and the reason I didn't give 5 stars is that the specific training techniques are lumped in with the rest of the text.
It would have been helpful for those to have been called out in some way to make them easier to find for quick reference.
Control Unleashed® Book 1: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog - E-Book
As it is, you have to comb through the rest of the text to find them. This book changed my life. Yes, it is formatted kind of strangely, but the training exercises and the entire approach to training has been absolutely life-changing for both myself and my dogs! I cannot recommend it highly enough, particularly if you are a newbie dog trainer or if you have a reactive, fearful, or hyper dog.
My dog bit a delivery guy. In the dog's defense, it was July 3rd; even though it was early in the day, there were plenty of fireworks explosions going on. He's skittish to begin with, and the noise doesn't help. That, and the delivery guy was freaking out, so of course my guy thought this was a danger situation.

Might not be anything I can do about that, but there are other situations where the dog goes completely insane for no apparent reason. Maybe if I can get that stuff to stop, the more frightening situations will be a little less so for him. Huge help, right away. My dumpling is figuring out that if he's about to get stressed out, what he needs to do is to sit and look at me; then he'll either get a "good boy" or further instructions.
I'm going to keep working on my buddy I'm referring to it as Communist-party-style reeducation, but at least this is fun.
FOr the moment, though, things are already much better. Great book for owners of dogs with 'issues'.
I use these techniques with my own dogs and for some of my students. Leslie McDevitt's writing style is personal and fun to read. Chapters are organized over a period of time week 1, week These are proven techniques and her program is used and plagiarized a lot. download the book from the source and give it a try! Teamwork is key. So is homework. Every interaction with your dog is an opportunity for training. Good luck!
What I particula Just as great the second time around! What I particularly loved is that I haven't read these training tips a million times from other sources; McDevitt is creative and practical, and her CU games will be ones that you'll want to teach to your dog right away! I'm looking forward to continuing to work through this book with our shy 1-year-old German shepherd.
I have already seen progress in her and in my relationship with her since reading this book. Highly recommended to all dog owners who want to engage and train on a deeper level.
Nov 02, Shawndra rated it it was amazing. This has extremely useful exercises and training advice. I already knew some of the stuff in it from working with another trainer to learn clicker training, but found it extremely useful to have everything laid out that way with examples and practical use, etc.
I liked how she used her dog Snap as an anecdotal example throughout the book. Even the simplest exercise taught me some very interesting things about my respective relationships with my two dogs.
I would have said the complete opposite o This has extremely useful exercises and training advice. I would have said the complete opposite of what the exercise showed me if asked.
Needless to say this is a book I will be referring back to time and again. It will definitely make me a better trainer. I think every dog person should read it, especially those who've adopted dogs with previous baggage.
Sep 22, Johanna rated it really liked it Shelves: A definite must-have for anyone with a reactive or high energy dog. This book primarily focuses on go-to-mat training, which I have found extremely useful for my aggressive rescue dog, however the rest of the exercises are designed for training classes with a group of several dogs, so is not very practical for owners without access to such a resource hence the 4-Star rating.
Still, for the mat work discussed in this book alone, I would highly recommend this book, especially when combined with A definite must-have for anyone with a reactive or high energy dog. Still, for the mat work discussed in this book alone, I would highly recommend this book, especially when combined with the training techniques discussed in Click To Calm by Emma Parsons and Behavior Adjustment Training by Grisha Stewart.
Oct 23, Alex rated it really liked it Shelves: Really enjoyed this book.
It had practical explanations of techniques to help with reactive dogs and a huge number of applicable examples about individual cases with variations to each technique. My only critique is that I wish this book had been more geared towards working with pet reactivity and less agility focused even though I do love agility.
The classes she describes seem to deal with dogs who have a solid base on their reactivity whereas most cases I see are working at lower level than Really enjoyed this book.

CU is an excellent book offering a loose class plan with structured exercises to allow your dog to relax and focus in challenging situations. The CU book has a format that can be used for a full range of dogs with issues ranging from lacking confidence to pinging off the walls and lunging because of the situation.

An excellent read and a book I'll refer back to. Apr 22, Amelia rated it it was amazing. I've never successfully finished this book because I keep rushing out to try the exercises! The real strength of this method is that it takes emotional states into account, providing solutions for owners of struggling performance dogs as real as people like me, whose companion dogs have some emotional baggage. I do believe that this book could have benefited from the rigor and precision of Jean Donaldson's writing, or the user-friendly simplicity of McConnell's dog dork much?
Nonetheless, the I've never successfully finished this book because I keep rushing out to try the exercises! Nonetheless, the ideas and exercises here are very useful, Pretty much a must for the canine enthusiast. Dec 11, Kelley rated it it was amazing Shelves: I wish I had read this book a year ago. But better late than never. It gives great training tips and really goes against some theories that don't work for specific issues. I will definitely look into more of her books and recommendations.
I would love to find a trainer that does a CU class or something like it. I borrowed this book from my agility club, but may have to download my own copy because it's worth to have for reference. Apr 26, Tegan rated it really liked it. This is an excellent excellent book with many brilliant recommendations for training exercises in reactive dogs or just dogs that need some extra help on focus and confidence. I rarely go a day without using some part of this book in my training.
The only reason I awarded this book 4 stars is because the formatting is really weird and makes the whole book a little difficult to follow at times. The content is good, but it's presentation is lacking. Nov 08, Sheryl rated it really liked it.
This book has some unique and helpful techniques and training to help reactive dogs. It also incorporates this training into Agility and how to overcome issues that can effect your dog in the ring. I am going to try some of these training exercises on my dog and see if it helps her to focus better. I recommend reading this book if you have a dog who can't focus or has stress issues.
Jul 02, Kizz Robinson rated it really liked it. Really interesting book for dogs who seem too wound up to train. Though the lessons are geared toward handlers who want to work on agility it's easy to see how the basic lessons could be beneficial for every dog and, if implemented early, could head off behavioral issues rather than soothe them.
I have questions about implementation and consequences still but I know what I need to look for. Dec 06, Brie rated it really liked it.
Terrific, easy to follow exercises for dogs who need focus and confidence. I would have liked it more if it were better organized. I found myself flipping around some. Overall a terrific book and resource! Jan 10, Sparrow Knight rated it it was amazing Shelves: I refer to it on a regular basis. I appreciate the non-force techniques, and the stories intermixed.
Sep 10, Lara rated it liked it Shelves: The story of McDevitt's dog Snap at the end is worth the entire book. Aug 06, Dale Pearl rated it it was amazing Shelves: My struggle for time worthy dog training books is finally over. No fluff, no drama, and to the point.

About Leslie McDevitt. I used to have to stand there for minutes making stupid lip smacking noises to get him to come. When he comes, I click and we go back excitedly to the sofa to pull out the liver treat.
We will work on it outdoors now so that hopefully with time I can get him to leave really high value things outdoors too and come when called. I've been using premack on walks too. There are certain trees that Romeo MUST sniff and he will pull me towards them when he's about 6 feet away from it. I hate that, so now, I will ask him to sit next to me then we heel for a few feet, and when he does, I'll click then send him to sniff the tree that's the reward. He gets the tree if he comes and sits and heels nicely.
I've also been teaching Romeo self control with the Leave Its already but upping the ante as suggested in the book. It would be nice to leave 5 of whole sausages around him and walk away and be sure he doesn't touch them!
He's a sneaky one tho' and will stick his looong mouth out to grab food when he's sure I can't get to him in time. Must back it up a step. Holding on to the leash, when Romeo crosses the threshold, I'd stand still and not move.
The minute he turns to look at me, I click and treat him. Apparently this is so that the dog doesn't see these doorways as gates to a world without mum. It's reinforcing running away from mum!! Relaxation Protocol - I've been doing Karen Overall's relaxation protocol I think this is available online.Feb 12, Karen rated it really liked it.
The description of the book makes it sound perfect for him. McDevitt teaches her dog to actually signal when another dog is present and look at it, thus desensitizing it, because soon her dog will stop worrying about the other one, while still knowing that the "threat" is near. Though the book was targeted to agility instructors, McDevitt offers practical, useable advice for all instructors and the handlers of reactive dogs. I used to have to stand there for minutes making stupid lip smacking noises to get him to come.
